Pre-requisites: English Writing 100 B and Reading 100, or English as a Second Language 173 and 172, and English as a Second Language 226, or qualifying score on the English as a Second Language placement test. Course Description: This class emphasizes a close connection between reading and writing in order to support and expand critical thinking skills. Students practice various techniques of expository and argumentative writing based on personal experience and critical reading.

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, you will be able to: • Read, analyze, and evaluate college level writing • Identify various rhetorical styles and methods of development in academic essays • Analyze and compare themes in several different texts • Write summaries of and reactions to assigned readings • Write organized, clear, and well-developed response essays in academic prose according to process approach. • Apply the principles of paraphrasing and quotation in order to avoid plagiarism • Document sources • Interpret and analyze readings and composition techniques in classroom and group discussion

Texts and Materials: Required: 1. Sourcework-2nd Edition by Dollahite, N.E., Haun, J.; Thomson- Heinle 2. Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa L. ; Recommended: a monolingual English dictionary, such as Longman’s Advanced American Dictionary

Course Requirements: 1. Attendance: You are expected to attend every class. You must attend both classes (Monday and Wednesday) during the first week or you will be dropped in order to add another student from the wait list. If you miss more than 4 classes for any reason, you may be dropped. If you miss a class, find out what you have missed and make up for the work. If you are absent, you can turn in your homework by e-mail.

2. Participation: You should make every effort to participate actively in all classroom activities. Class participation will include individual, pairs, and group work. Your contribution to class activities and being prepared will help your grade.

3. Homework: Homework assignments will include essay writing, revising, editing, vocabulary work, reading, grammar exercises, journal writing, and other preparation necessary for class work. You will also conduct a research for each writing assignment, and combine your thoughts with citations from various sources. You are expected to do all your homework assignments in order to be prepared for the class. Late homework will not be accepted.

4. Writing Assignments: You will write a total of 6 formal writing assignments, at home and in class. Instructions for writing essay: a) Write your full name, class, date, the number of the assignment, the draft of the assignment (First, Second, Final Draft), and the topic in the upper right –hand corner. b) Use standard size paper (8.5x11 inches). c) Type essay assignments in 12 point font, black ink. d) Paragraphs must be double-spaced to make them easier to edit and correct. e) Leave 1 inch margin on all 4 edges of the paper.

5. Journal Writing: Reading can help you to learn to write. You will keep a journal in which you will summarize and write responses to essays from “Interpreter of Maladies” by Jhumpa Lahiri. All entries must be numbered, dated, and typed. The purpose of journal writing is to help you develop your ideas freely and write quickly and fluently.

6. Tests and Exams: There will be quizzes on grammar and editing during the quarter, a midterm exam (in-class essay), and a final exam (comprehensive research paper). Quizzes and exams cannot be made up.

Grading: Your grade will be based on the following:

Class attendance and participation: 5% Writing Assignments: 50% Journals: 5% Quizzes: 10% Midterm: 15% Final: 15%

Total percent: 100%

Grading Scale: 90%-100% = A; 80%-89% = B; 70%-79% = C; 60%-69% = D; 59% and below = F

Important Dates: January 28, 2012 Last day to drop with no record of grade February 3, 2012 Last day to request P/NP grade March 2, 2012 Last day to drop with a “W” Final Exam: Wednesday- March 28th, 2012- 6.15pm-8.15pm
