Pre-requisites: ESL 253 and 225 or qualifying score on the English as a Second Language placement test. This class may be taken concurrently with ESL 261 and 262.

 

Course Description: This class emphasizes development and practice of expository writing. You will learn to write clear, grammatically correct and well-developed paragraphs using a variety of sentence patterns and vocabulary appropriate for the assignment. Mastery of the paragraph writing will lead to writing short essays.

 

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • plan for paragraph assignments building to short essays
  • compose first drafts of unified paragraphs and short essays
  • revise for clarity
  • recognize rhetorical patters
  • edit sentence-level grammar and mechanics of revised drafts
  • rewrite revised and edited paragraphs and short essays
  • recognize and use word forms and idioms to demonstrate expansion of active vocabulary
  • write summaries  of brief readings
  • write paragraph and short essay as a response to short essay responses to brief reading

Texts and Materials:

Required: Developing Composition Skills, 2nd Ed.by Ruetten, M.;

                  Thomson Heinle,  2003                                   

Recommended: a monolingual English dictionary, such as Longman’s Advanced American

                           Dictionary

Materials: - Two college ruled notebooks for journals and class assignments

                 - A binder for handouts

 

Course Requirements:

1. Attendance: You are expected to attend every class. You must attend both classes (Monday and Wednesday) during the first week or you will be dropped in order to add another student from the wait list. Missing over  4 classes for any reason is cause for being dropped. If you miss a class, you are responsible for getting the assignments from another student.

 

2. Participation: You should make every effort to participate actively in all classroom activities. Class participation will include individual, pairs, and group work. Your contribution to class activities and being prepared will help your grade.

 

3. Homework: Homework assignments may include paragraph writing, revising, editing, vocabulary work, reading, grammar exercises, journal writing, and other preparation necessary for class work. You are expected to do all your homework assignments in order to be prepared for the class. Late homework will not be accepted.

4. Writing Assignments: You will write a total of 6 formal writing assignments, at home and in class.

Instructions for writing paragraphs and essays:

a) Write your full name, class, date, the number of the assignment, and the draft of the assignment (First, Second, Final Draft) in the upper right –hand corner.

b) Use standard size paper (8.5x11 inches)

c) Type paragraph assignments in 12 point font, black ink.

d) Paragraphs must be double-spaced to make them easier to edit and correct.

e) Leave 1 inch margin on all 4 edges of the paper.

 

5. Journal Writing: Reading can help you to learn to write. You will keep a journal in which you will write responses to a variety of reading selections that will be given to you during the quarter. All entries must be numbered, dated, and written legibly or typed on a computer. The purpose of journal writing is to help you develop your ideas freely and write quickly and fluently.  

 

4. Tests and Exams: There will be quizzes on grammar and editing during the quarter, a midterm exam (in-class writing), and a final exam (in-class writing). There will be no make-ups for tests, exams, or assignments.

 

Grading: Your grade will be based on the following:

 

Class attendance and participation: 5%

Writing Assignments: 25%

Journals: 10%

Quizzes: 20%

Midterm: 20%

Final: 20%

 

Total percent: 100%

Grading Scale: 90-100 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; 59 and below = F

 

Important Dates:

January 26, 2007                                                  Last day to drop with no record of grade

February 2, 2007                                                  Last day to request P/NP grade

March 2, 2007                                                      Last day to drop with a “W”

Final Exam:                                                         Wednesday; March 28; 4.00 p.m.-6.00 p.m.
