About Edwina

Clown and Edwina:

Halloween is my favorite holiday. I grew up in the small farming town of Twin Falls, Idaho where fall is a magic time when the air is crisp, the trees change colors to brilliant golds and rusts, and there is often a light frost on the ground in the morning. As kids we created our own Halloween costumes and participated in a parade through the main street of the town before going door to door in our neighborhoods in the evening entertaining the home owners to get sweet treats. I have fond memories of these times and now laugh at some of my homemade costumes. I love this picture which was taken during the annual Halloween Party hosted by the De Anza Child Development Center. The clown is a student of mine who is majoring in Elementary Education.

I teach my classes using collaborative learning methodology which means that if you are my student you will work in a number of different groups during the class time throughout the quarter. I believe that we learn best when we learn in community and that working with others in a classroom environment helps us to appreciate what each person can bring to the group.

My Education:
    B.A.   Linfield College in Speech/Drama/English
M.A.  University of Hawaii in Speech Communication
Ph.D. University of Utah in Communication Studies

Edwina, Marcos and Vince:

In 1999 several educators from 12 colleges in the bay area created the Regional Learning Communities Consortium (RLCC). Our goal was to support each other as we created learning community programs on our campuses. Over the years we have met together once or twice a year to share ideas, learn from experts in learning communtiy methods, and support each other in our campus endeavors. This picture was taken in the Spring of 2005 when our good friend Professor Vincent Tinto, a well-known researcher from Syracuse University, presented the compelling results of his longitudinal study of learning communities to our group. With us is Marcos Cicerone, Director of Staff Development at De Anza, who along with Sally Wood, Judith Espinola and me created the RLCC. For more information about the RLCC click on the link at the bottom of my Home Page.
