Speech Major/Degree RequirementsA.A. Degree in Speech Communication
A.A./A.S. Degree Requirements- Completion of all General Education requirements (31-42 quarter units) for the A.A./A.S. degree with a minimum 2.0 ("C") grade point average.
- Completion of all Major requirements with a minimum 2.0 ("C") grade point average. Major requirement courses can ALSO be used to satisfy G.E. requirements.
(Note: A maximum of 22 quarter units from other academic instutions may be applied toward the major.)
- Completion of a minimum of 90 degree-applicable quarter units (GE and major units included). All De Anza courses must be completed with a minimum 2.0 GPA ("CC" average). All De Anza courses combined with courses transferred from other academic institutions must be completed with a minimum 2.0 GPA ("C" average). (Note: A minimum of 24 quarter units must be earned at De Anza College.)
Major courses for certificates and degrees must be completed with a letter grade unless a particular course is offered on a pass/no-pass basis only. Major Requirements
- SPCH 1: Public Speaking or Speech 10: Fundamentals of Oral Communication
- SPCH 7/ICS 7: Intercultural Communication
- SPCH 8: Argumentation and Critical Inquiry in Oral Communication or SPCH 9 Argumentation: Analysis in Oral and Written Communication
- JOUR 2: Mass Communication
- SPCH 15: Problem Solving and Critical Reasoning in Groups
- SPCH 16: Interpersonal Communication
- SPCH 70 /BUS 80: Effective Organizational Communication
- Specialty Area (contact an instructor to create)
Contact a full-time Speech Communication instructor to create your specialty area o study (12 units). Your specialty area description with signed approval from the Speech Communication Department must accompany your application for the degree.

Note: Students planning to transfer to a CSU and major
in Communication should take the four CSU core requirements: Speech 1,
8 or 9, 15, and 16
