Goals:
· To read critically a wide variety of texts, including visual images and other nonverbal texts.
· To learn to apply the principals of argumentation (logic).
· To recognize, compare, and evaluate alternative points of view, values, and meanings, including those from outside sources.
· To write analyses and interpretations.
· To formulate, support, and critique arguments both in class and in writing.
· To integrate multiple sources and points of view in a documented, analytical research paper.
Requirements:
1. Active participation in class discussions and on the listserv
2. Regular attendance (three unexcused absences will result in a grade of W)
3. Keeping up-to-date on the reading and assignments
4. Four papers, one of which will be written in class
5. Final examination
6. One meeting with the instructor
7. Eleven quizzes
8. Two class presentations
Texts:
Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield, Ben & Jerry's Double-Dip
Ruth Ozeki, My Year of Meats
Annette T. Rottenberg, Elements of Argument (6th ed.)
Grades:
90%=A, 80%=B, 70%=C, 60%=D (possible 650 points)
First Paper = 50 points
Second Paper = 75 points
Third and Fourth papers = 100 points each (200)
Final = 100 points
Class presentations = 25 and 35 points points each
Class participation = 50 points regular plus 15 for 3 postings to the class listserv
Quizzes = 10 points each and I drop the lowest = 100 points
Notes: You must attend each day during the first two weeks, or I
will assume that you have dropped. If you are going to miss ANY day
during the quarter, you must call or email me and excuse yourself
BEFORE class. Otherwise, the absence will count as unexcused. Two
unexcused absences will result in a grade of W.
I penalize late papers by automatic subtraction of points. See me if
you have a dire emergency and make certain that I write myself a note
to give you a break.
If you have any problems, please tell me. I have been through every sort of writing block myself!
Plagiarism will automatically result in a zero (0) on that assignment.
If you are unsure, always err on the side of giving credit to your
sources.
Form on all papers:
· Double-space everything, including indented quotations. This includes hand-written, in-class essays.
· Underline or italicize titles of books, compact discs, full-length plays, television series, movies, and book-length poems.
· Put double quotation marks (" ") around titles of essays, articles in magazines, chapters, short plays, stories, and songs.
· If a quotation is four lines or more, indent ten spaces from the left and omit quotation marks.
