Goals: English 1A is a transfer level course in reading and
composition which prepares students to analyze college texts and to
write college papers. In particular, you should learn to:
1. Generate ideas and topics for your essays.
2. Organize, focus, and develop your ideas.
3. Write to engage different audiences.
4. Develop style and grace in your prose.
5. Read for comprehension and with a critical perspective.
6. Edit your own papers and those of others.
7. Turn your personal interests into academic papers.
Requirements:
1. Active participation in class discussions and regular attendance.
2. Keeping up-to-date on the assignments and reading.
3. Six papers, one of which will be written in class. 4. Three presentations.
5. One meeting with the instructor.
6. About fifteen quizzes.
Texts:
Latterell, Re-Mix
and a Reader ($3.00)
Grades: 91-100%=A, 90%= A-, 88-89% = B+, 81-87%=B, 80%=B-, 78-79%=C+, 70-77%=C, 60-69%=D (possible 650 points) First paper = 20 points. Second, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth papers = 100 points each (400) Third paper = 50 points Class presentations = 10 points each (total of 30) Class participation = 30 points Combination of 5 and 10 point quizzes for a total of 120 points (dropping lowest)
Notes: You must attend every day or I will assume that you
have dropped. If you cannot make it to class during the first two
weeks, please notify me before class by phone or email. If you miss ANY
day during the quarter, please either write me a message or email me
and excuse yourself. If you have five (5) unexcused absences, you will
be dropped (W).
I penalize late papers by automatic subtraction of points. See me if
you have a dire emergency and make certain that I write myself a note
to give you a break.
If you have any problems, please tell me. I have been through every sort of writing block myself!
Plagiarism will automatically result in an F on that assignment and a
serious case will result in expulsion from the class. If you are
unsure, always err on the side of giving credit to your sources.
Form on all papers:
Double-space everything, including indented quotations. This includes hand-written, in-class essays.
Underline or italicize titles of books, compact discs, full-length plays, television series, movies, and book-length poems.
Put double quotation marks ( ) around titles of essays, stories, poems, chapters, short plays, and songs.
Use single quotation marks ( ) only for quotations within quotations.
If a quotation is 4 lines or more, indent 10 spaces from the left and omit quotation marks.
