A paper which develops out of three online assignments

25 Points (2-3 pages double spaced)

Due Sunday Week 3, 11:55 PM

Writing an Analysis of a Disagreement!

A common writing assignment in argument courses asks students to analyze the sources of disagreement between two or more writers who take different positions on an issue.  In writing such an analysis, you need to determine whether the writers disagree primarily about facts/relevance, about values, or about both.  To illustrate an analysis of disagreement [see the] brief analysis of the sources of disagreement between Turner and the Council for Biotechnology Information [in your book].  [It’s] written as a short, formal paper following the MLA documentation style.

Your Writing Assignment
Using as a model the analysis of the controversy between Turner and the Council for Biotechnology Information in Chapter 2 (pp.39-41), write an analysis of the sources of disagreement between NBC News, Steve Adubato, Allahpundit, Michael Welner and Lionel Shriver and the controversy over whether or not NBC should have aired the videos sent to them by the Virginia Tech killer.  Links to these articles appear in the “Week 3 Activities” room in Catalyst.

Goals of the Writing Assignment

Demonstrate adequate essay and paragraph writing.
Introduction that presents the central focus of the essay—its thesis.
Paragraphs that explain/develop/defend that thesis with specific, detailed evidence.
Paragraphs that address ONE supporting point at a time

Paragraphs which illustrate that ONE main point with evidence from the articles.
Sentences that employ clear syntactical structure, that are varied in length and style, and   that follow basic rules of grammar and spelling
Quotations properly cited in MLA style (see Appendix 2 pp. 293-97 in your book)
Demonstrate understanding of the 5 strategies for reading arguments, in particular, how to analyze sources of disagreement.

If you still do not have your textbook, I will leave 1 copy of chapter 2 outside     my office door (F61-f) on Tuesday morning.  Please make a copy for yourself and             return the original where you found it so that others may do the same.

Submit your essay to Catalyst no later than Sunday week 3 by 11:55 PM.

If for some reason you have trouble submitting your essay, you can email it to me          at r_stolpe@yahoo.com
