EWRT 100 Persuasive Essay

Paper #5 – Persuasive Argument Paper
---

Content:
For this assignment, we will be looking at the issue of gun use in America, especially use of guns by teens. In Patterns of Reflection, we have articles by Ivins “Ban The Things. Ban Them All” (396), Andrews “Why Guns Matter” (400), Collier “Adult Crime, Adult Time” (403), and Cohen “Kids Who Kill Are Still Kids.” We will also be watching excerpts of the documentary by Michael Moore titled Bowling For Columbine.

You will write a paper that tries to persuade readers to agree with your thesis on guns or children or violence in America, possibly comparing our situation to that in another country.  Here are some possible thesis statements you might argue:

Private ownership of semi-assault/assault weapons should be illegal; however, individuals should be allowed to keep a rifle or handgun in the house + 2-4 reasons why.

Individuals should be allowed to carry a gun for protection; however, there should be much tighter regulations and restrictions on getting a gun in the first place + 2-4 reasons why.

Personal counseling in schools should be a higher priority and better funded; on the other hand, parents should accept responsibility when their children commit felonies + 2-4 reasons why.

Juveniles who commit murder with guns should be tried as adults; however, they should be incarcerated in juvenile facilities until they reach the age of eighteen + 2-4 reasons why.
