Important Note: If you sign up for a reading course, you have to expect to pay for reading materials (listed below under Course Description). Total cost will be around $100, but keep in mind this is for the equivalent of two courses (10-units). Please plan to have your materials bought and paid for by the second day of class so you can keep up with the work. For your convenience, I will have one copy of the textbook and Course Reader on reserve at the DeAnza main library. You may use that book for two hours at a time within the library. You will be able to photocopy required homework pages using the library's photocopy machines. Thanks.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
LART 211 is a 10-unit LinC (Learning in Communities) course integrating the reading and writing skills necessary for college success. This class combines Reading 211 with EWRT 211, both prerequisites for EWRT 1A. Our students often work in small, cooperative groups.
Our overarching theme is "Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise" focusing on insightful reading and writing for your best life in the information age. Required materials include Insightful Writing by Sabrio and Burchfield (about $65.), The Color of Water by James McBride (about $14), and the Course Reader (about $20), all available at the De Anza College Bookstore. For the reading portion of this class, we focus on six specific strategies: vocabulary improvement; identifying main idea; annotating, paraphrasing and summarizing; making valid inferences; evaluating persuasive claims and evidence; and using patterns of development. For the writing portion of the class, students write five essays based on the readings, creating a writing portfolio that is ultimately evaluated by a committee of other English faculty to determine each student's readiness for EWRT 1A. Students must also sign up for two co-requisite labs, READ 212 and EWRT 212. Each lab meets for one hour a week. Students who successfully complete this course and its co-requisites will definitely be well-prepared for EWRT 1A. Hope to see you in class!
