LART 211
COURSE DESCRIPTION: LART 211 is a 10-unit LinC (Learning in Communities) course integrating the reading and writing skills necessary for college success. This class combines Reading 211 with EWRT 211, both prerequisites for EWRT 1A. Our overarching theme is "Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise" (Practical Reading And Writing In a Learning Community). Students who successfully complete both parts of this LART 211 will be well-prepared for EWRT1A. Required materials include: 1. Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise Course Reader (available ONLY at the De Anza College Bookstore for about $35.00)
2. The Color of Water by James McBride (available new for about $14.00, or used in most bookstores or online).
For the reading portion of this class, we focus on six specific strategies: vocabulary improvement; identifying main idea; annotating, paraphrasing and summarizing; making valid inferences; evaluating persuasive claims and evidence; and patterns of development.
For the writing portion of the class, students write five essays based on the readings, creating a writing portfolio that is ultimately evaluated by a committee of other English faculty to determine each student's readiness for EWRT 1A.
For both portions of LART 211, students often work in small, cooperative groups.
Important Note:If you sign up for a reading course, you have to expect to pay for reading materials. Total cost will be around $50, but keep in mind this is for the equivalent of two courses (10-units). Please plan to have your materials bought and paid for by the second day of class so you can keep up with the work. For your convenience, I will have one copy of the Course Pack on reserve at the DeAnza main library. You may use it for two hours at a time within the library.
My Schedule: For Spring 2012, I am teaching one section of LART 211 in L-47, M-Th, 8:30-10:45am. My office hour: Thurs. from 11-11:50 am in the Writing and Reading Center (WRC), on the third floor of the Advanced Technology Center (ATC 309).
Hope to see you in class!
