New to De Anza in the Winter '06 quarter, I am thrilled to find myself
teaching EDUC 58/ELIT 58, Children's Literature, perhaps my all-time
favorite class to teach.
What makes it my favorite is the many
layers of our relationships to the work: we in the class are adults
reading children's literature, so we are not the intended audience for
the work. Instead, we read as the adults who guide our children--the
children in our families, at our day care facilities, in our pre-school
and school classrooms, in our bookstores and elsewhere in our
communities--to and through their reading experiences, taking into
account a rich variety of cultural contexts in which our guidance takes
place. And a lot of children's reading takes place far removed from any
guidance we might have provided--or in spite of that guidance.
In other words, it's complicated, and it's a ton of fun to explore those complications.
