1.    The city planning department plans to make repairs this coming summer to Shattuck, Euclid and College streets at an estimated cost of $18,000, 22,000 and $150,000 respectively, it was announced by City Engineer Kenneth Keenan.


2.    After a three day search, police today reported the arrest of Aileen McGuire, 19, in a Hayward bus depot on a charge of  arson in connection with the fire that left the Emporium Capwells department store in Oakland a burned-out hulk last week at an estimated loss of $2 million.

3.    “The defendant’s crime may not have caused physical harm, but the hardship he inflicted on those who trusted him with their savings cannot be ignored,” said Judge George Z. Roberts yesterday in sentencing Norris Josephson to a nimiumn of five years in the state penitentiary on a fraudulent investment scheme that bilked local residents of more than half a million dollars.

4.    The Weather Bureau today offered little hope to corn and wheat growers across a wide belt of Central California with a prediction that no rain is foreseen for the next week to relieve the month-long drought that has cut the crop y an estimated ten percent to date.

5.    The Crescent Butte Dam burst last night and a wall of water twelve feet high swept through small towns, farms and ranches in eastern Idaho, leaving an unknown number of dead and injured and millions of dollars in estruction.
 
6.    In a talk last night to the local press club, Russell Cooper, a political reporter based in Washington, D.C., said that the traditional role of the political reporter has been superseded by modern advertising techniques, which allow a candidate to project an image in the “picture-hungry, simplicity-oriented media that are unwilling or unable to deal with complexities.”

7.a There is a shortage of workers in the Sandworth Islands, Tomas and Turo Lakes areas of Eastern Oregon.

  9. a. Last night at about 5:15 a guard at the Hopkins Art Center gallery noticed a painting missing.
      b. Guards searched all visitors to the gallery but could not find the missing painting.
     c. The gallery had been open since 10 a.m. It was due to close at 6 p.m.
    d. The painting was part of an exhibition of impressionist paintings on display this month.
    e. The painting showcased a group of people picnicking by a lake.
     f. The picture was 14 by 18 inches in siaze and is valued at $4,500. It is by an unknown artist.
