FEATURE WRITING BLOGWEEK ONE::
Monday: In class obits; teacher introduction. Assignments: 1) finish obit; 2) find two different articles on the same subject and be prepared to compare and contrast in class.
"Write it tight; write it bright; and write it tonight"
WED: LEDES 1. Synthesize; find ways to bring the most important facts up high in the story. 2. Don't forget the dog's name. 3. Forget the person's name in the lede if they aren't famous or possibly known in the community. 4. Look for colorful language: blaze, burnt-out husk; excruciating pain.
assignment: start thinking about a news profile. Bring in names of possible local profiles and why we would want to read about them.
WEEK TWO
MONDAY::News stories: PROFILES...looked at profile of the Panamanian man who discovered that cough syrup from China contained the same poisonous chemical as antifreeze. Page one, New York Times. Among other things, the story had a great use of specifics. See link: "The Everyman who Exposed Tainted Toothpaste." Assignment: bring in good examples of writing.
WEDNESDAY: + If it bleeds, it leads. +Take words out of your vocabulary: unique, legendary, incident, vehicle. +SHOW, don't TELL

WEEK THREE:
MONDAY: +The longer the interviews, the better the chance of getting good, meaningful quotes. +Do your backround on the questions: 1) Is the US ready for a female president? 2)How much will people pay for an album when Radiohead gives them the chance to pay whatever they want? The more you know, the more you will be able to add to the stories.
