COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course offers a broad introduction to the nature, vocabulary, and history of the visual arts. The course will explore how art communicates, how to analyze and interpret it, and how we can see it as a cultural product that reveals something about the society that produced it. Students will analyze the role and development of art in past and present cultures; will develop perceptual skills as well as a visual arts vocabulary, and will gain a foundation that will help them understand and interpret art works that they encounter in the future.

Getlein, Mark. Gilbert's Living with Art, 7th (or 8th) edition. McGraw-Hill, 2004.

GRADING:
Midterm exam - 50 points
Final exam - 60 points
Group assignment – 30 points
Term paper - 50 points
Class participation - 50 points
Total: 240 points (=100%)
Extra credit - 15 points
EXAMINATIONS:
The exams will include material from both the lectures and the required reading. Make up exams are given after the final exam and only for compelling documented reasons, for circumstances that are beyond your control.
TERM PAPER:
This assignment will require a visit to a local museum, and will consist of a formal analysis of a piece of art. The details will be discussed in class.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Attendance, midterm exams, final exam and term paper are all required in order to complete the course. Otherwise, an incomplete or failing grade will result.
ACADEMIC HONESTY:
Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty. A student shall not receive credit for work that is not the product of the student's own effort. If you are caught cheating during an exam your paper will be taken away and you will be asked to leave. Similarly, plagiarism in your paper will not be tolerated.
