COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will analyze the political, and cultural function of the art and architecture produced in Europe from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries. We will explore the characteristics of various artistic styles, including the Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Romantic, Realist, and Impressionist periods; examining key works of art and important artists. We will aspire to understand how the specific social, political, religious and historical circumstances contributed to the development of those artistic styles. In addition, students will sharpen observational skills and develop a proper vocabulary to talk about art and architecture.
