ARTS 2A: PREHISTORIC THROUGH BYZANTINE ART

DE ANZA COLLEGE - SPRING 2009

COURSE DESCRIPTION:          

This course will provide an introduction to the art and architecture of the Western world from the Paleolithic period through the Byzantine period. We will analyze key works of art from the periods studied, explore the characteristics of various artistic styles, and understand how the specific geographical, social, political, religious and historical circumstances contributed to the development of those styles. We will also work on sharpening observation skills and on developing a proper vocabulary to talk about art and architecture.

Kleiner, Fred S., Christin J. Mamiya. Gardner's Art Through the Ages, The Western Perspective: Volume I, 13th edition (12th edition ok). Wadsworth Publishing.

EXAMINATIONS:

The examinations will include material from the lectures, the videos, and the required reading. Makeup examinations will be given only for compelling documented reasons, for circumstances that are beyond your control, and will be given on the same day as the final exam.

 

TERM PAPER:

The term paper assignment will require a visit to a local museum, and will consist of an analysis of a piece of art from one of the periods covered in class. The details will be discussed in class. The paper must be turned in on its due date, before class. Paper must be submitted in hard copy, not via email. No late papers will be accepted.

EXTRA CREDIT

Choose two discussion questions from each of the following chapters in the Study Guide for the textbook, and write half a page to one page answer for each question. Please do not choose questions that were discussed in class.

  • The chapters: Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
  • The Study Guide can be found at the library reserve desk (do not wait for the last moment; remember that other students in the class will be using the same book).

 

ACADEMIC HONESTY: 

Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic honesty. A student shall not receive credit for work that is not the product of his/her own effort. If you are caught cheating during an exam your paper will be taken away and you will be asked to leave. Similarly, plagiarism will not be tolerated.

 

GRADING:

Final Exam – 70 points

Term Paper – 50 points

Class Participation – 50 points

Total: 220 points

Extra Credit – 15 points
