The Listening & Speaking Center is just one of eight programs in The Student Success Center designed to support your language learning experiences at De Anza College. You don't have to be enrolled in an English or a Speech class to take advantage of our services. Stop by AT 304 and we will give you a tour of our lab!

Winter 2010
In the winter, we will be offering 18 1/2-unit ESL classes that start week 3 of the quarter (See LSC Classes Brochure for a flyer you can download). Starting week two, we will also be offering a variety of free conversation workshops and other specialty small group workshops and tutoring opportunities for De Anza students. Joining these activities is a great way to improve your communication skills and make friends at the same time. We also offer a language exchange program every quarter where you can share your first language with a student at De Anza learning that language. For more information about these and other programs offered in AT 304, click on the topics listed on the sidebar or scroll down the page for more information.

Listening and Speaking Center (ATC 304)
Our lab in the Advanced Technology Center opened in the fall of 2002 for students at De Anza who want to improve their language communication skills. We offer a variety of programs to meet your needs every quarter. You can tape and evaluate your presentations in small recording rooms, improve your English proficiency using ESL software, and participate in conversation workshops or sign up for 1/2 unit small group classes taught by ESL trained professionals. We also sponsor Cross Cultural Partners and a language exchange program to bring students together in learning partnerships. We are also very excited about the dedicated tutors who have come forward from the Speech Department and from Academic Skills to help students prepare their speeches and improve their speaking and vocabulary skills.

Come up and see us on the third floor of the Advanced Technology Center to find out more about our programs! ATC 304 is located just to the right at the top of the stairs. You can also call us at 864-5385

ESL 213
We will be offering 5 sections of this vocabulary and idiom practice class starting the third week. All of our 1/2-unit classes can be taken twice for credit.

ESL 216
In ESL 216, students have a chance to read a novel or a memoir and discuss what they read in a small group setting. We will be reading Almost a Woman winter 2010.

ESL 223
In ESL 223, students have a chance to talk about what they read and try out new vocabulary in a small group setting. In this intermediate level reading class, we read A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park in fall 2009. Our winter 2010 book selection will be The Circuit by Francisco Jimenez.

ESL 224
We will be offering two sections of this popular reading comprehension and discussion class starting week three. We will focus on current issues, events, and people in the news. This class also gives students the opportunity to try out new vocabulary and practice giving short oral summaries.

Workshops
If you would like to practice your conversation, improve your listening skills, learn a popular song, or get an orientation to ESL software, join us for one of our 50 minute workshops starting week two of the quarter. These workshops are free for De Anza students. We will offer a series of specialty workshops too. Check out our Workshops page to find out what is coming up! The weekly schedule will be posted here after school starts.

Tutoring
Do you need to prepare a presentation for Speech 10 or ESL 261? We have tutors who can help you organize a speech and/or help you with your pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Whatever you need, we are here to help out. You can practice your conversation too. Check our Tutoring schedule and come up to the lab to sign up for a 30 minute session starting week 2.

Language Exchange
We will be setting up a language exchange program again fall quarter. This exchange was initiated during World Languages Week winter quarter 2003 and proved to be very popular with our students. For two weeks, you can practice a language you are learning with a native speaker of that language. Look for the dates of the Language Exchange to be announced soon. Applications will be available online and in LSL the third week of the quarter. Click on our Language Exchange link for more information.

Cross Cultural Partners
You can pick up applications to participate in CCP in The Listening and Speaking Lab located in ATC 304. http://www.deanza.fhda.edu/ccpartners
