2. Comprehend and analyze academic reading passages
3. Develop academic writing skills
4. Practice and rehearse discussions and presentations of topics related to the Child Development course

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK & MATERIALS
1. The Developing Person: Infancy through Adolescence, 6th edition, Berk, Laura E.
2. A good monolingual dictionary, such as Longman Dictionary of American English

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION
Your attendance, class work, and homework are important parts of the learning process.  Students with more than 3 absences (3 tardies of more than 10 minutes equal one absence) may be dropped by the instructor or have their grade lowered. It is better to come to class late than to miss the whole class.  Save your absences for emergencies. You must arrange with other students to get copies of the homework you miss, and you are responsible for those assignments in the following class. If you are absent in the first two weeks of class and do not inform the instructor ahead of time, you may be dropped to allow another student on the wait list to be added.
You will have many opportunities to work together in pairs or small groups. You must make every effort to participate in all classroom activities. Remember, the more you do, the more you will improve. We encourage you to be courageous, take risks, and make mistakes!

COURSE CONTENT
Vocabulary Lists: Each week will have assigned vocabulary words from the textbook. For each word, write down the definition, part of speech, and the original sentence from the book. You can do your vocabulary lists on paper or on index cards.
Vocabulary Quizzes: You will take vocabulary quizzes for each list of vocabulary from each chapter of the textbook.
Weekly Assignments: You will create chapter outlines for each chapter you read in the textbook. The chapter outlines will help you review important material for tests. You will also have other related assignments to the textbook and CD 10G class.
In-Class Presentations: As we review material from the textbook and other materials from your CD 10G class, you will work with other students in groups to summarize and present key concepts to the class.
Writing Assignments: You will turn in a first and second draft of all your CD 10G writing assignments to your ESL instructors first to get our feedback and suggestions for improvement. We will also do peer editing of these writing assignments in class.

** Students who come to class underprepared more than 10% of the time and/or do not participate actively in group work or class discussions will receive a lowered grade.

CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM
If you copy words or ideas from another person’s writing, you must give credit to the author by stating that person’s name. It is not acceptable and is considered plagiarism, a form of cheating, to use the other person’s ideas without stating his/her name. Copying another student’s work during a test or for an assignment is also a form of cheating. If you are found cheating, you will receive 0 credit for that assignment. Cheating more than once will result in being dropped from class.
