ESL 5 (LinC)Welcome to Whose Country Is This Anyway!?!
ESL 5 LinC with HIST 17
Winter 2006
In this class, you will be learning about US history while improving
your reading and writing skills. We will focus on social,
cultural, political, and economic aspects of US history, not just from
the perspective of white Europeans, but also from the perspective of
people of color. You will develop critical reading, critical thinking,
and clear, meaningful writing at the college freshman level of
English. Because all of you are taking both ESL 5 and HIST 17,
you will have the benefit of working together and learning

Course Content
Compositions
You will be creating compositions both in class and at home.
Every time you turn in a composition, you must include all prewriting
and drafts by putting the most current draft on top and stapling
everything together. Please keep everything you write, in and out
of class (including brainstorming, outlining, etc.).
Quizzes
We will not have any exams, but we will have quizzes on the skills practiced in class.
Homework
Homework assignments from your reader, texts, and handouts will be given to improve your reading and writing skills.
Novel
We will read a novel along with several other reading assignments
in your reader. Small groups of students will do presentations
and lead discussions on assigned chapters in the novel and on the short
stories. Details will be given later in class.
Fieldtrip
We will go on a field trip this quarter. Everyone is required to
go. Please arrange your schedule accordingly. If you
absolutely cannot attend, you must do an alternative research paper,
which will be long and difficult compared to the fun and interesting
field trip.
Assessment
Special assessment (evaluation) will be done on this learning community
(not the students). From time to time you will be asked to talk
or write about your experiences. I really appreciate your
cooperation.
Class Collaboration
In this class you will often work collaboratively with your
peers. You are expected to participate fully in class, small
group, and paired activities.
Small Group Writing Workshops
You will meet with a small group of students and your ESL instructor
almost every week to discuss drafts of your writing.
Attendance and participation in these workshops are extremely important
and will affect your grade.
Attendance
You must come on time to every class. If you miss more than four class
meetings during the quarter, you may be dropped from the class.
If you miss more than four class meetings, your final course grade will
be lowered one full mark (i.e., B to C). If you miss more than
seven class meetings, your final course grade will be lowered another
full mark (i.e., C to D). One two-hour workshop will be counted
as two classes. Three late arrivals to class will count as one
absence. If you do plan on dropping HIST 17, then you must also drop
ESL 5.
If you do miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact your
classmates or your instructors, get the assignments for the following
day and come to class prepared.
To pass this course, you must:
1) satisfy all the requirements listed below.
2) participate in the small group writing workshops.

ESL 5 and Hist 17 Grading Scale:

All assignments should have your name, the course the date, and
the assignment in the upper right hand corner. All compositions,
including drafts, must be typed: double-spaced; 1 inch margins; and 12
point, standard font.
Late Paper Policy
No late papers will be accepted for any reason. NO MATTER WHAT,
you must find a way to get your papers to us. If you turn in work
late, you will receive "0" points. Receiving "0" points on one
composition or discussion paper will greatly affect your final course
grade. If you miss a class, get the assignment right away from
one of your classmates. It is your responsibility to do this.
Plagiarism
If you present another's work as your own, or copy sentences, phrases
or passages from an uncited source, you will automatically fail the
assignment and may be dropped from the class or fail the course.
Disruptive Behavior
De Anza College will enforce all policies and procedures set forth in
the Standards of Student Conduct (see catalog). Any student
disrupting a class may be asked to leave that class.
Administrative follow-up may result.
Pagers and Cell Phones
Please turn off all pagers and cell phones before entering class.
Office Visits
Please come see us if you have any questions, problems, or just need a
little extra help. Come see us early, before a small concern
becomes a big concern! If you cannot come to our office hours, we
can arrange another time.
A Final Note
By the end of this class you will have a better understanding of the
roots of America. You will also be a better reader and
writer. Improving your reading and writing skills does not come
without effort. If you put maximum effort into your work, you
will be surprised at how much progress you can make. Don't worry;
you don't have to do it alone. Your classmates, a counselor, Greg
and I are here to help you. Together we can accomplish great
things. So, let’s get busy, work hard, and enjoy the quarter!
(I highly recommend you review this green sheet and refer to it regularly.)
