Arts 2G / Intl 10: Arts of Asia

This course is a general introduction to the many, diverse artistic traditions of Asia. We will focus on the paintings, sculpture, ceramics and architecture of China, Japan, and India, with a brief introduction to the arts of Korea, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Himalayas. Covering the Neolithic period to the 16th century, the content of the course will emphasize the cultural, religious and social contexts of the art. We will apply an interdisciplinary approach to art history including methods of analysis from history and cultural studies. Students will also learn basic skills in stylistic analysis and how to describe a work of art.
