Paper One 2E/Intl 20

Arts 2E / INTL 20 History of Art: Africa, Oceania and the Americas Cadge-Moore Paper Assignment #1: African and Central American Textiles in the Learning Center: Looking at Works of Art DUE: Thursday, April 22th .

Assignment: Visit the Learning Center on campus at De Anza College. Explore the halls, walls and different floors looking for the African and Central American textiles on display. Write a 2-3 page (typed, double-spaced) essay. Pretend you are a writer for the school newspaper and you are writing a brief review of this display. You want to inspire your readers to visit the display themselves. What do the textiles look like? How do they enhance the Learning Center environment?

Choose two or three specific textiles and describe them in detail. You may choose any of the examples to describe as long as they are from Africa or Central America (Mayan) (labels in the Learning Center provide identification). You may want to compare two or three from different regions. (For example, a Mayan huipil from Mexico and a Yoruba man's shirt from Nigeria).

Describe your examples of art in as much detail as possible using stylistic analysis. What do the textiles look like? What details do you notice? What colors and patterns did the artist use? Compare the similarities and differences between your examples.

Make sure to include: 1. An introduction to the display. 2. identify the textiles 3. your reaction to the display and Learning Center environment 4. specific descriptions of two or three textiles and points of comparison between the examples 5. conclusion

Write your paper in an essay format!!

You do not need to do additional research, but you may refer to the labels in the Learning Center which provide information on the textiles. If you need help, ask the instructor for guidance at anytime.
