261Greensheet for ESL 261- Low Advanced Listening and Speaking
Prerequisites English as a Second Language 251 or qualifying score on the ESL Placement Test
Course Description ESL 261 is a 3-unit course with an emphasis on comprehension of spoken language and expression of ideas in small and large group formats. Brainstorming, active listening, interviewing, public speaking and other skills will be practiced
Required Textbook Talk it Over with CD by Joann Rishel Kozyrev
Attendance Policy I will take attendance at the beginning of each class. If you miss more than three classes you may be dropped from class. Being late three times is equal to being absent once.
Grades are based on the following items: Completion of assignments (homework, presentations, projects) Comprehensibility (pronunciation, intonation, stress, volume, fluency) Other speaking skills (involvement and participation in classroom activities, conversation skills, presentation skills) Active listening skills (understanding other speakers' ideas, understanding nonverbal cues)
Evaluation of these skills will be in the form of Regular quizzes- 40 points Outside Assignments and Reports - 20 points Midterm - 15 points Final Exam - 25 points
Final Exam Date: December 11th from 7-9 a.m.
Grades are based on points A+ = 97 -100 B+ = 87 - 89 C+ = 77 - 79 A = 93 - 96 B = 83 - 86 C = 70 - 76 A- = 90 - 92 B- = 80 -82
D+ = 67 - 69 F = 59 and below D = 63 - 66 D- = 60 - 62
Late Work If your assignments are late, you will have one point deducted for each class period. Quizzes cannot be made up unless you notify me before the date of the quiz. You must take the exams on the date they are scheduled.
Academic Honesty Do your own homework and tests. Do not copy other people's answers. Anyone found cheating on homework or tests will receive an F and may be dropped from class.
