About Karen

Karen started teaching at De Anza College in 1996 in the Readiness Lab while attending the MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program at SJSU. She graduated in 1998 and started teaching in the ESL Department in 1999.

Karen lives in San Jose with her husband Clyde and son Ryan. Originally from New York, Karen drove out to the West Coast with her sister Kim in 1982. They settled in San Francisco and several years later Karen took a one year trip to Japan (Kyoto and Tokyo) where she studied language and culture. She visited China (Guilin and Hong Kong) and Taiwan on that trip too. Karen chose to teach ESL because of the life-changing experiences she had abroad that year.

Karen has an open minded approach to teaching and works hard to create a safe and enjoyable learning environment for all. She includes many methods, such as lectures, group work, projects and debates to engage the varied learning styles of her students. Her objective is for all students to make progress in their intellectual development and gain confidence in the process.
